National Handloom Day Celebrated in Jaidpur, Barabanki: Government Schemes Highlighted for Weavers

Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh — August 7, 2025:
On the occasion of National Handloom Day, a special awareness program was held in Zaidpur, Barabanki, at Hamza Marriage Hall in Shah Katra. The event aimed to educate local weavers about government-supported schemes focused on handloom development and financial empowerment.

Organized by Ansar Handloom, under the leadership of its chairman Zafar Ahmad, the event saw the presence of numerous government officials, institutional representatives, and prominent social contributors.

National Handloom Day: In Kanpur, a Wasi Nagar, Zaidpur weaver won the Lucknow division’s 2nd prize for a stole, receiving ₹15,000 from the Handloom Director.

NABARD, NHDC, and DIC Played Key Roles in Awareness

Key stakeholders present at the event included:

  • Divya Rai, District Development Manager, NABARD Barabanki
  • Vinod Verma, representative from the Textile Department
  • Anoop Singh, from National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC), Noida
  • Ravi and Pragya, officers from the District Industries Centre (DIC), Barabanki

General Manager of DIC District Industries Center, Mr. Ashutosh Singh also provided information about government schemes to the weavers and assured to find solution to the problems of the weavers.

These officials delivered insightful sessions on multiple central and state-level schemes available to the weaving community. Their presentations emphasized the importance of awareness and access to structured support for traditional artisans.

Highlighted Government Schemes for Weavers

The key schemes discussed during the event included:

  • Mukhyamantri Handloom and Powerloom Scheme
  • Chief Minister Youth Scheme (CM Yuva Yojana)
  • Yarn Subsidy Scheme (15%)
  • RMMMS (Risk Management and Marketing Management Scheme)
  • Various other skill development, marketing, and material procurement support programs

These initiatives are designed to enhance productivity, ensure financial security, and create market linkages for weavers across the region.

Recognition and Felicitations

During the program, Ummer Ansari and Asif Ansari & Ibrahim Ansari were felicitated by Zafar Ahmad for their contributions to the handloom community.

In addition, active journalists were also recognized for their support in promoting grassroots initiatives. Reporter Mohammad Asif and Ummer Ansari were honored on stage for their journalistic efforts.

At the end of the event, information brochures and booklets were distributed to weavers to help them understand the application process and eligibility for various welfare schemes.

UPIDR and MSME Organize Industrial Tour to Promote Handloom Sector

In a significant initiative to promote India’s traditional weaving industry, 65 students and professors from Lucknow University, accompanied by Hon’ble Chairman, Uttar Pradesh Institute of Design and Research (UPIDR), Mrs. Kshipra Shukla, visited Ansar Handloom (Mohd. Zafar) in Zaidpur, Barabanki district. The visit, organized by UPIDR and MSME, aimed to provide hands-on learning about handloom and powerloom stole weaving techniques.

Hands-On Experience in Traditional Stole Weaving

During the tour, students witnessed the entire stole-making process, from yarn preparation and dyeing to intricate designing and final weaving on both handloom and powerloom machines. Master weaver Mohd. Zafar demonstrated each step, allowing students to experience the craftsmanship and precision required in stole production.

National Handloom Day Awareness

Officials from NABARD highlighted that the Government of India declared 7th August as National Handloom Day in 2015, emphasizing the importance of handloom in India’s heritage and economy. The upcoming celebration will focus on encouraging youth to preserve and promote this traditional craft.

Promoting Design and Entrepreneurship

Mrs. Kshipra Shukla stated,

“The handloom industry of Uttar Pradesh is a symbol of our cultural heritage. Industrial tours like this not only offer practical knowledge to students but also inspire future entrepreneurs and designers to contribute to the sector’s growth.”

The initiative is expected to strengthen the handloom and textile ecosystem in Uttar Pradesh, fostering collaboration between academic institutions, artisans, and government bodies. Students expressed enthusiasm about learning directly from skilled artisans and understanding the challenges and opportunities in the handloom industry.
